Ideas for Handmade Gifts

This need not be difficult as is often portrayed. Take some time today and write down a list of those you wish to give a gift to and what you need to make these gifts. Go out shopping together to purchase the necessary supplies. Each day next week sit down with your family and put the gift together. These gifts will be the most meaningful gifts your loved ones will receive this year.

Sweatshirts with Handprints

Make sweatshirts or T-shirts with hand print Christmas trees. Your local craft store should sell many sizes and colors of sweatshirts and T-shirts. Many also sell plain canvas tote bags, or plain aprons. All of these would be wonderful gifts with your children’s handprints and age stamped on them.

Sweet Treats Attractively Packaged

Use any of the recipes from Day 11. Package them in a decorative box or bag. Make sure to include the recipe on a pretty card so the recipients can make more for themselves if they eat it up faster than expected!

Peppermint Bath Salts

2 c. Epsom salts
1/2 c. sea salt
4 to 6 drops peppermint oil
2 to 3 drops red food coloring

Place one cup of Epsom salts and 1/4 cup sea salt in a bowl or resealable plastic bag. Add 2 to 3 drops peppermint oil. Mix the remaining ingredients in a second bowl. Layer the red and white salts in a clear bottle or jar, tilting the bottle or jar as you fill it. Tie with a ribbon and some small candy canes.

Child's Handprints

Use the recipe from Day 3 for self-hardening clay. Roll out a circle and have your children press their hand into the soft clay. Put the year and the child’s name on it and attach a wire hanger on the back.

Christmas Placemats

Option 1

paper
old Christmas cards
glue
crayons
markers or paint
clear contact paper

Cut the pictures from cards. Draw a picture on a piece of paper and this is the back. Then glue on the card pictures. Cover both sides with contact paper.

Option 2

plain cloth placemats with no design
chunky stamps
colorful cloth paint

Stamp the placemat with the stamps. Make sure to allow to dry thoroughly before wrapping. We’ve done the “Fruits of the Spirit” using grapes and apple stamps, and then using a paint pen and writing the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23) around the edge of the placemat. They are now Grandma’s favorite placemats!
