Today's Activity - Hanging of the Greens
Decorate the house together as a family. If
you can, wait to put out your nativity set until later in
the month (Day 24). If you feel brave,
let each child have a Christmas tree in their bedroom that
they are allowed to decorate themselves. Maybe they would
like to make handmade ornaments to put on their trees.
Here are a couple suggestions for doing that:
- Make your own dough, make Christmas
ornaments, and then paint them.
Self-Hardening Clay
4 cups of flour
1 1/2 cups of salt
1 1/2 cups of water
Mix the salt and flour in a bowl. Add water gradually
to form a ball. Knead (pound, roll and pull) until it
no longer falls apart. Create your project and allow
it to dry at room temperature for approximately two
days. Larger or thicker projects may take longer. Once
they are dry, you can paint. Store any unused clay in
a sealed bag in the fridge. Allow it to warm to room
temperature before you use it again.
- Children can string popcorn and cranberries,
using their own patterns. Young children can string round
cereal.
- Glitter Ornaments
Trace a simple star or design on paper. Tape the paper to
the table. Lay waxed paper over the top so you can see the
design, taping this to the table as well. Have the children
drizzle glue over the outline of the design and then sprinkle
on glitter. Dry overnight and then peel from wax paper.
Add a ribbon to hang on tree.
- Pinecone Ornaments
Gather pinecones. They don't have to be large, although
pinecones that still have a bit of stem attached at the
top work best. Spray paint some of them gold, some silver,
and some with clear sealer and while still wet sprinkle
glitter on liberally, then spray again with clear sealer.
This should be done in a well-ventilated space. You could
also have the children paint the pinecones by hand with
gold or silver paint, or dabbing glue on the cones and sprinkling
with glitter. When the cones are dry, tie a beautiful ribbon
around the top and you have a very nice ornament.
